ABOUT:
Kashtan Ukrainian School of Dance is a folk dance group established in 1979 in Cleveland, Ohio. Kashtan has been an active part of the cultural scene of Cleveland, Ohio, for more than three decades and has performed at concerts and festivals throughout Ohio, other parts of the Midwest and Eastern United States, and Canada. In 2019, Kashtan’s parent organization, the Ukrainian Cultural Arts Association of Greater Cleveland (UCAA), hosted a formal dinner event, named “zabava,” to celebrate the dance group’s 40th anniversary. I was commissioned to create a logo, brand identity, and marketing materials, and set up online ticket sales for the event.
For the logo, I drew inspiration from traditional Ukrainian flower wreaths, also known as “vinky.” I chose red to be consistent with Kashtan’s already-established brand. Red symbolizes energy and passion, which was important for me to evoke throughout this process as the dance group does so throughout their artistry. The logo was consistently displayed as white with a red background color throughout all related marketing material. These materials included designs for social media posts, event posters, programs, tickets, table tents, a commemorative t-shirt, and much more.
